Think of the ocean as a huge aquarium. When oil spills, it's like pouring thick, sticky paint into the water, harming creatures and plants. Plastics are even more dangerous, as they break into tiny pieces that fish get mixed up with their food. This pollution turns our beautiful aquarium dirty and threatening, affecting all ocean life.
Coastal/Beach Pollution Caused by Litter and Plastics
Think of our beaches as nature's playgrounds. Plastic, often carelessly thrown away, carried by wind and water, ends up on these sandy shores. They are like unwanted intruders in a child's playground, not only making it unclean, but also posing dangers to marine life and to us. Ensuring that beaches remain free of this debris is vital to the health of our oceans and the enjoyment of these natural spaces. It is important to note that: using single-use plastic and other plastic objects we are rapidly increasing the amount of plastic (and eventually microplastics) that end up into the ocean.
Waste Management/Recycling
Think of waste management as a puzzle-solving game where each piece - paper, plastic, and cans - fits into a specific place. Recycling is like a cycle of renewal, turning what we no longer need into resources, helping to preserve our planet’s limited resources. This process is our way of ensuring that nothing goes to waste and that everything gets a chance to be useful again, contributing to a healthier ecosystem.
Seaport
A seaport is one of the most important transportation hubs. This is because ships have the capacity to transport huge quantities of goods and people, making them highly valuable to businesses, governments and politics. However, they are also susceptible to accidents and pollution, which dictates the need for establishing a proper “green port” management plan.
Risk Management
Risk management is like a book with instructions, procedures, and rules for preventing and mitigating accidents and risks associated with human activities. Think of having a plan B, plan C, etc., for every operation. It's like playing a game and ensuring we know the rules to keep everything and everyone safe.

Overfishing
When fishing too many fish, especially the young ones, disrupts the food-chain balance, leaving fewer fish to maintain the population. It's not only about having fewer fish in the sea; it affects the entire marine ecosystem, similar to a garden that struggles to flourish if over-harvested. Responsible fishing ensures there are always enough fish for the future, keeping the ocean's garden healthy and thriving.
(Un)sustainable fishing practices
There are numerous ways to catch fish. Some of them are less pervasive and able to maintain the ecosystem’s balance, by taking only the surplus of marine production. We call these methods sustainable fishing. Some are harmful and end up destroying the sea bottom and habitats, they catch too many fish (before they had the chance to make their own children), or even other creatures -dolphins or turtles- than what they were planning (which is called byfishing). These practices are named unsustainable fishing.
Artisanal fishing
Artisanal fishing is like a small, cozy family picnic by the ocean. Families catch just enough fish to eat and share with friends. It's a way of fishing that keeps everything in balance, like having just the right amount of food for your picnic.
Oil rig
An oil rig is a platform like a city floating in the sea, with a drilling bit that drills the bottom for extracting oil.. It's like a machine that pumps up oil from the ocean floor. But we need to be careful because sometimes it can accidentally spill oil, which is harmful for the ocean and the animals that live there.
Algae plantation
Think of an underwater garden where tiny plants, called algae, grow just like vegetables in a garden. These plants aren't just homes for fish—they can help make medicine, food, and even biofuel. When biofuel is used in engines it means less oil is consumed which is beneficial.

Fishing regulations are like the rules of a game. They tell us when and where we can catch fish and how many we can take. It's important to follow these rules so that there will always be plenty of fish to catch in the future.

Think of Marine Protected Areas as nature's 'No Disturb' zones in the ocean. It's like a special club for fish and other sea creatures where they can grow and be safe. These areas are like underwater playgrounds where marine life is protected from harm, allowing them to live happily and healthily. More and broader MPAs could improve the life underwater.

An underwater habitat is like a cozy home for fish and other sea animals. It's where they live, play, and sleep. Imagine a city under the sea where everyone has their own special house.

This is similar to what happens when oil rigs or tanker ships, which are like huge bottles filled with oil, have leaks in the ocean. It's important to be very careful and have proper risk management plans with these activities to prevent this kind of pollution, ensuring our ocean stays clean and safe.

Global Warming
Think of Earth as a car parked in the sun with its windows closed. The sun's rays get in, but the heat can't get out, making it hotter inside. In the case of global warming, gases from cars, factories, and other human activities act like the windows that trap heat around our planet. This trapped heat is raising the planet’s temperature, melting ice in places like the Antarctic, causing sea levels to rise and altering the natural habitats of animals such as polar bears and penguins, making it harder for them to live in a warmer environment.
Ocean Warming
Imagine the ocean as a big swimming pool that's getting too warm because the sun is shining extra hot on it. This happens because of things people do, like driving cars and using a lot of electricity, which makes the air warmer. When the ocean gets warmer, it's hard for sea animals and plants, especially the colourful coral reefs, to live happily. Some fish might even have to find new places to live because their home is too warm.
Ocean Acidification
Think of the ocean like a big fish tank where the water is getting too sour, like adding too much lemonade to a drink. This happens because too much carbon dioxide from human activities is dissolved in the sea. The higher acidity makes it hard for creatures like clams and corals to build their shells and homes. Just like a fish tank needs the right balance to keep the fish happy, our ocean needs the right balance to keep all its creatures healthy.
Water Level Rise
Earth’s rising temperature (global warming) causes the ice-sheets that lay on land to melt and drop into the ocean. This is making the water levels rise. This increasing water levels can cover parts of beaches and coastal cities, which means less coastal space for both animals and people.
Alien Species – Water Habitats
Imagine new friends moving into the fish neighbourhood from far away. Alien species in water habitats are like these new friends. Sometimes however, they can compete with the local species for food and habitats, causing problems and even threats for the local ecosystem.
Eutrophication – Water Contamination
Eutrophication is like putting too much food in the fish tank, which increases fish defecation making the water a bit messy for the fish. In reality the surplus of food is consumed by the base of the food-chain (phytoplankton), which leads to uneven growth and further problems when these species die (microbial infections). It can create "dead zones" where fish and other creatures can't live because there's not enough oxygen in the water.
Ocean’s Climate Regulation Function
The ocean acts like a superhero that helps control the world's weather. It's like a giant air-conditioner that cools the air in some places and warms it in others making sure the temperature stays just right. If this system fails or doesn’t work as it should, the weather events become extreme, causing storms, droughts, heatwaves and a multitude of problems for people and animals.
Sewage System
A sewage system is the extension of the plumbing system in our homes but for the entire town. We need it to remove the dirty water from our homes and from our cities. At the end of it, water is usually treated and cleaned before it is released in rivers or in the sea. If we don't treat it properly, it can leave the water dirty and cause sickness for the fish and other animals, and eventually humans.
Water Treatment Station
Water treatment happens in two ways in human settlements. It happens before water comes to our taps, by adding sanitising agents (like chlorium) in the water reservoirs that store it. It also happens for the sewage waters that we release into the sea. If we don't clean our drinking water properly, it can cause major health issues and epidemics, and not cleaning our sewage waters can cause pollution in the local ecosystems. Clean water is important both ways.
Chemical Fertilizers
Chemical fertilizers are like food supplements for plants, which help our gardens grow big and strong. If we use too much however, plants will not be able to absorb it, and rain will eventually wash it to a river or the sea. This can have polluting results and consequences in the water, like eutrophication events.
Artificial Reefs
Artificial reefs are constructions in the sea, made by humans and resembling a natural reef. Their purpose is to act as a surface for marine life to grow onto. Algae, barnacles, corals, and oysters attach to it and create a habitat where different sizes of fish can live. Eventually, it can also control erosion, protect coastal areas, block the use of trawling nets, support reef restoration, improve aquaculture, or enhance scuba diving and surfing.
Renewable Energies
Renewable energies are like using special energy from nature, such as the sun and the wind. If we keep using too much non-renewable energy like fossil fuels, it can make the Earth too warm and cause problems for everyone.
Offshore Windmills
Offshore windmills are like regular land windmills which produce energy from the wind, but instead they are placed on floating platforms in the ocean. This is done because in the ocean the landscape is flat as there are no trees, towns, hills or mountains to slow down the wind, so there is usually more power to harness. While they are great for making clean energy, we need to be careful where we put them, so they don't disturb the homes of fish and other sea creatures.
Solar Plant
A solar plant is like a sun power station. It uses the sun's energy to make electricity, similar to how your solar-powered calculator works, but in a much larger scale. If we don't use more clean energy, we might keep using dirty energy that harms the Earth. Solar plants should be carefully designed to avoid interfering with the local life (e.g. hide the sunlight from sensitive areas)
Fossil Fuel
Plants and animals that died a very long time ago, eventually got buried under layers of earth and rock. Over millions of years, heat and pressure turned them into fuel like coal, oil, and natural gas. We dig or drill these fuels out of the ground and use them to create energy. However, burning fossil fuel for energy releases carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. In addition, fossil fuel aren't unlimited, which means they could run out one day. This is why we're trying to use cleaner, renewable sources of energy, like the sun and wind, to replace them. Since humans started burning fossil fuels, the carbon dioxide that took millions of year to be trapped into the earth is rapidly released into the atmosphere.
Extreme Weather Events
Think about rain. It comes in all forms, like drizzle, regular or heavy thunderstorm rain. Sometimes though, it rains even more than usual or it rains for a very long time, so we call this an extreme rain event. Other times, it rains less water than usual, or it doesn’t rain at all for a longer than usual period, so we call this an extreme drought event. We do the same categorization with other weather events like extreme heat, cold, floods, cyclones and other. These events can be very harmful for humans and ecosystems, so we need to study them and be properly prepared to face them.
